What is homelessness?

Homelessness is defined as anybody who’s housing situation includes living in:
– A shelter
– A motel or campground due to the lack of an alternative adequate accommodation
– A car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station
– Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship

As County Commissioner, Dave has identified homelessness as a major issue that can be corrected within New Ulm and Brown County. Dave is a member of the Brown County Homelessness Coalition.

People may question if homelessness is a reality in rural Minnesota. The New Ulm Area School District (District #88) has reported several students being identified as homeless. Our local homeless shelter is called NUMAS Haus.  Very often it is full and needs to turn people in need away, because they simply do not have room. This is a challenging area and we need to work on this problem as a community. Dave is confident that we can improve the situation by working together.
